Background of the study:
Economic migration has become a defining characteristic of many rural areas, influencing labor markets and agricultural productivity. In Esan West Local Government Area, Edo State, the migration of individuals in search of better economic opportunities has significantly affected the agricultural labor supply. Many rural households, traditionally dependent on family labor for farming activities, now face a shortage of workers, which can lead to reduced crop yields and compromised food security (Eboh, 2023). The dynamics of migration, driven by urbanization and the lure of higher wages, have reshaped traditional agricultural practices and labor allocation (Igbinovia, 2024). Additionally, remittances from migrants may provide alternative income sources; however, they do not always compensate for the labor deficit in critical agricultural operations (Osagie, 2025). This study investigates the effect of economic migration on the agricultural labor supply, exploring how demographic shifts influence agricultural productivity and the overall rural economy (Eboh, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Economic migration in Esan West has led to a significant reduction in available agricultural labor, adversely affecting crop production and food security. This labor shortage poses serious challenges to sustainable agriculture and rural development, necessitating an evaluation of the underlying causes and potential solutions (Igbinovia, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the impact of economic migration on agricultural labor supply.
  2. To evaluate the effects on crop production and food security.
  3. To propose strategies to mitigate labor shortages in agriculture.

Research questions:

  1. How does economic migration affect the availability of agricultural labor in Esan West?
  2. What is the impact of reduced labor supply on agricultural productivity?
  3. Which measures can effectively address labor shortages in rural agriculture?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Economic migration significantly reduces the agricultural labor supply.
  2. There is a direct relationship between labor shortages and decreased crop yields.
  3. Strategic interventions can mitigate the adverse effects of labor migration on agriculture.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it examines the critical impact of economic migration on agricultural labor, offering insights for policymakers and stakeholders to develop targeted strategies that sustain agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods (Adegbenro, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is confined to analyzing the impact of economic migration on agricultural labor supply in Esan West Local Government Area. It does not extend to urban migration or other sectors. Limitations include data collection challenges and migration dynamics variability.

Definitions of terms:

  • Economic migration: The movement of people from rural to urban areas in search of better economic opportunities.
  • Agricultural labor supply: The availability of workers for agricultural production activities.
  • Food security: The state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.
